Reddit meets the Indie

October 30th, 2008 by Ian

submit to reddit I am a redditor and have been for some time. Yes IM buddies; that’s where that interesting link came from. When reddit decided to open up their code to the open-source community we all knew that some interesting stuff would pop-up. One of the UK’s rather more respectable rags; the Independent has decided to utilise the capabilities of reddit to rank its own news stories. It’s great to see a big old paper embrace an open-source system like this, but it’d be better if the Indie’s comments and those upon it’s reddit pages were syncronised. Small steps tho, ‘eh.

There is an announcement on the reddit blog and the new Independant reddit is now live, albeit not as busy as it could be.

Chris Morris at CERN

October 22nd, 2008 by Ian

Something about these pictures that I recently stumbled across excites me.

Chris Morris at CERN

Chris Morris at CERN

We have a machine here that, some say, can generate a black hole and destroy the earth and we have the greatest minds in British Comedy: Chris Morris, Simon ‘League Against Tedium’ Munnery and Kevin ‘I’m in pretty much everything worth watching’ Eldon. All in the same room tunnel! I can only presume something amazing is going to happen.

All joking aside, the CERN podcast with these people is very interesting if a lot of the physics usually overwhelms you (as it does me).

I think I’m progressing at my JavaScript education and then I see something like this in-browser emulation of an Amiga Workbench desktop.

Workbench in JavaScript

Workbench in JavaScript: yes, you can click on everything

Genius. A great way to show off your chiptunes music and demo’s. Just don’t right-click!

10> Never Gonna Give You Up – 20> GOTO 10

October 7th, 2008 by Ian

Just when I thought I was over the Rickrolling meme, this happened: MTV allowed users to vote online for whoever they wanted as ‘the best act ever‘. MTV forgot that there are nerds out there who will happily vote all day for whoever they think that the anonymous collective would rather win. The slightly smarter nerds amongst us of course build something like the RickVoter. This allows anyone to automatically vote a load of times for Mr. Astley.

Sure. This isn’t really in the spirit of things but fuck it; It’s MTV. Lets look at who they suggest as best act ever:

  • Celebrity car-crash: Britney ‘we should trust our president’ Spears
  • #1 Britney Spears tribute act: Christina Aguilera
  • 32 year old, teenage-angst mongers: Greenday
  • Effects pedal obsessed “tink of teh childrun” idiots: U2
  • Tokio Hotel. Okay, I have no idea who they are but their spelling of capital cities is awful.

Yup. I think this is one award that Newton-le-Willows finest honestly deserves.

It’s great to know that in the middle of all this election madness, that someone is keeping sight of what’s important [craigslist].
